Celebrating Vivien Crain: A Legacy of Heart, Dedication, and Community

Posted: May 23, 2026 | Author: Sandra Exline, Marketing & Communications at Yorkshire Academy

After nearly four decades of unwavering dedication, Yorkshire Academy prepares to say goodbye to a truly remarkable leader, mentor, and friend. Vivien Crain, who is affectionately known by many as the heart and soul of our private school community, is retiring and leaving behind a legacy that cannot be measured simply in years, but in lives touched, relationships built, and a community strengthened.

A Calling Rooted in Love

When asked what inspired her to become an educator, Vivien’s answer was simple: “My love of children.” That love has been the constant thread throughout her 40 years in teaching and school leadership at Yorkshire Academy. From her earliest days in the classroom to her role as Director, she has carried that passion into every interaction—with students, families, and colleagues alike.

Vivien still recalls the joy of her first year in education: the excitement, the energy, and the sense that school was simply a “fun place to be.” That feeling never left her—and it’s one she worked tirelessly to create for everyone who walked through Yorkshire’s doors.

Building More Than a School—Building a Family

Over the years, Vivien has helped shape Yorkshire Academy into far more than a place of learning. It is, in her words, a family unit. The sense of community on our campus goes far beyond a private school experience.

“We celebrated together,” she reflects. “The milestones, the babies, the hard times… everything. It’s a family.”

That sense of connection is perhaps her greatest contribution. Whether comforting a parent, supporting a teacher, or greeting a child with a warm hug at the door, Vivien made it her mission to ensure that everyone felt seen, heard, and valued, creating a true supportive learning environment.

Her philosophy was clear: always support your teachers, always listen first, and always keep the door open to parents, to staff, and to the needs of every child.

Moments That Made Magic

Ask Vivien about her favorite memories, and her face lights up.

She fondly recalls the school’s International Olympics which celebrated diversity in education. These vibrant events where students proudly represented their heritage, dressed in traditional attire, sharing food, and celebrating cultures from around the world. “I still get goosebumps,” she says. “It was just amazing.”

There were also the beloved galas which were school fundraising events filled with creativity and joy, from Mardi Gras themes to casino nights—bringing families together in celebration and support of Yorkshire Academy.

And then there were everyday moments: spring flings, classroom visits, spontaneous hugs from students. The small, quiet reminders of why her work mattered.

Leading by Example

Vivien describes her leadership style with humility, but those who know her understand the depth of her commitment. Her guiding principle?

“I would never ask a teacher to do something that I wouldn’t do.”

And she means it. Whether stepping into classrooms, solving unexpected problems, or quite literally handling the messiest situations imaginable, Vivien has always led from the front—with grit, humor, and grace.

Her advice to educators is as practical as it is heartfelt:

·      Love what you do—truly and deeply.

·      Leave your worries at the door.

·      Take a moment to breathe when the day feels overwhelming.

·      And when in doubt, go find a child and share a hug.

A Lasting Impact

Vivien’s pride in her career isn’t tied to titles or accolades, but to the relationships she’s built, and the community she’s helped nurture.

“I’ve never felt like this is a job,” she says. “It’s our school.”

That sense of ownership, care, and pride has left an indelible mark on Yorkshire Academy. Generations of families have passed through these halls—many stay connected long after their children graduate. That enduring bond is no accident; it is the result of decades of intentional connection, open communication, and genuine care.

Looking Ahead—with Gratitude

As Vivien steps into retirement, she does so with mixed emotions. She looks forward to spending time with her growing family—especially her new grandbaby—but knows it will be difficult to leave behind the daily rhythm of a place she loves so deeply.

What will she miss most?

“My Yorkshire family.”

Though her presence will be deeply missed, her legacy will live on—in the culture she helped build, the leaders she mentored, and the countless lives she influenced.

A Simple Wish

When asked how she would like to be remembered, Vivien’s answer reflects the humility that has defined her career:

“Just as someone that loved the school.”

It’s a simple statement, but one that speaks volumes about her commitment and selflessness.

Because in the end, that love is exactly what made her extraordinary.

And that love she carried, for children, teachers, and for the Yorkshire Academy community, is exactly what made her impact so extraordinary.
