1. What age should my child attend pre-kindergarten?
To attend our pre-kindergarten educational program, your child should be four years old on September 1st. Pre-kindergarten is the next step after our preschool program. Yorkshire Academy welcomes students from 18 months to 5th grade and will provide the well-rounded education your child needs to succeed through our pre-kindergarten education requirements.
2. What goes on during a typical day?
In short, a lot. Every day is a new opportunity for our students to learn, have fun, and develop important skills. Your child will have numerous opportunities through our educational and enrichment programs to keep learning fun and interactive. We help prepare your four-year-old for elementary school, focusing on important subjects like math, science, social studies, and language arts. Our pre-K students also take enrichment classes like art, computer technology, library, Spanish, Social Emotional Learning, and Junior Athletes to develop a solid foundation of success. They’ll learn about primary concepts like colors, numbers, and shapes and get an introduction to reading and different cultures as well. There are also plenty of special events throughout the year to keep things fresh and exciting.
3. Parent/Teacher communication
We encourage parents and guardians of prospective students to start off by taking a tour of our campus in Houston, TX. We offer three parent/teacher conferences each year so that you can meet our caring and compassionate teachers face-to-face. We know that you have a busy schedule but want to stay informed, so we offer weekly and monthly highlights, so you know what’s going on with your child as well as our school.
4. Will you challenge my child academically?
We make sure that your child is actively engaged during their time in our pre-kindergarten program. You don’t have to worry because we employ the perfect combination of academic challenges with fun. We know four-year-olds are curious in nature, and we do our best to accommodate that. Getting ready for elementary school is important, and we’ll make sure your child has the solid academic foundation they’ll need to succeed.
5. What’s your pre-k curriculum like?
The Yorkshire Academy’s approach to our curriculum for pre-kindergarten students is multi-faceted. We blend the core subjects and enrichment classes previously mentioned and use our signature Frog Street Pre-K Curriculum and Jolly Phonics to incorporate early learning disciplines with a high level of enrichment. Your child will enjoy the ability to express their creativity in art, enhance their computer skills, become good global citizens with Social and Emotional learning, and enjoy music and physical activity. They’ll focus on phonics while learning their letters, learn symbols and patterns, study trees, learn about the stars, and so much more. They’ll even put on shows for parents and participate in a variety of lively projects along the way.
6. What are the hours for pre-kindergarten?
Our pre-kindergarten students arrive at our Houston, TX, campus between 8:15 and 8:30 a.m., and class starts promptly at 8:30 a.m. You have the option to have your child attend our Mid-Day Stay program. If you choose not to, please pick them up at noon at the Memorial drive-thru. If they do stay, they should be picked up between 2:30 and 2:45 p.m. at the same location. 7. Pre-k vs. kindergarten
You know that pre-kindergarten means before kindergarten, but what does kindergarten itself mean? Kindergarten is typically for children who are five or six-years-old and prepares them for first grade. Pre-kindergarten is for four-year-olds, preparing them for kindergarten. The word kindergarten is German and means a “garden of children.” It’s a place for your children to grow academically and socially.
