“First Grade at Yorkshire Academy is unique for many reasons. We not only learn how to read but how to choose books that grow our minds and hearts. We practice kindness, compassion, and caring. In first grade, we open hearts, open minds, and open doors to the future. First grade is a classroom with four walls and tomorrow inside.”
—Pam McMullen, first grade teacher
Exploring Math in First Grade
Math is a critical part of any quality first grade education. We plan to build on the skills your child learned in kindergarten and further prepare them for higher-level math as they move up in our lower elementary school. Our first grade teachers utilize GoMath, Greg Tang Math, and other resources, as well as a variety of techniques to instruct students in basic computation, problem-solving, analytical thinking, number sense, and more. Your child will engage in small groups and fun, but educational math games.
A Strong Focus on Building Language Arts Skills
Language arts is another area of crucial importance to a first grade education. We utilize an integration of language programs, including Savvas My View, to teach concepts like creative writing, phonics, verbal expression, and more. The whole class reading aloud, and individualized reading cultivate a love of reading within our first grade students.
Take Advantage of Enrichment Activities
No matter the quality of math and language arts instruction, no curriculum is complete without enrichment courses. Yorkshire’s enrichment program is unmatched for an elementary school. The time and resources given to music, art, computer, library, Spanish, physical education, and social emotional learning truly show how important Yorkshire feels it is to educate the whole child. All elementary students participate in the annual spring musical which is performed at the A.D. Players professional theatre. Additionally, first graders shine in the Thanksgiving play, and compete in the Houston Livestock and Rodeo Art Show. Along with the other enrichment classes mentioned, students may participate in PSIA (Private School Interscholastic Association) both at a district and statewide level in subjects such as Creative Writing and Storytelling.
Integrating Technology in First Grade
Technology is an integral part of daily life. At Yorkshire Academy, we believe the best way to prepare our students for higher-level schooling is to get them started on technology early. We utilize programs such as Seesaw, Raz Kids, and more.
Fun and Engaging Activities for Our First Graders
We incorporate exciting activities into our curriculum each day to ensure your child stays engaged with new material. We put on a Thanksgiving play, a big spring musical, bi-annual Olympic Celebrations, an academic competition, and so much more including two field trips each year. Your student will enjoy our fire truck visit, Mother Goose, the 100th Day of School Dress Up Day, as well as the chance to participate in pajama day!
Before and After School Care
Yorkshire Academy offers before and after school care, or “Safecare,” for those that need it. As partners with our working parents, our goal is to offer flexibility. We offer options for only before and only after school care, as well as both. Students enrolled in the program may be dropped off as early as 7:00 a.m. and picked up as late as 6:00 p.m. during the school year.
