Reading Education Program in Houston, TX
Fostering a Love of Literature
Yorkshire Academy is a school of readers! It's wonderful to hear students greet each other at the lockers in the morning and talk about their favorite books. Whether it's discussing Harry Potter or Nate the Great, the love of literature is evident in every grade. We strive to promote that love of reading in every part of our curriculum, especially in the Library Enrichment Program. All students are exposed to a world of new literature perspectives, and cultures. Learn more about how library and reading skills prepare students for upper-level schooling and beyond.
Preschool through upper elementary students love to visit the library. Upon reaching Pre-K, students are allowed to check out books. Students are read to beginning at 18 months and all through their Yorkshire years. Critical thinking and listening skills, as well as vocabulary building, are reasons to continue to read to older children.
Library Visits for Older Children
Once students reach preschool, we start taking them to our library. Pre-K through upper elementary students are welcome to check out books. We have everything from picture books to more advanced chapter books for intrepid readers. Regardless of your child’s reading level, we’ll help them pick out something they’ll love!
How Library Enrichment Benefits Students
Libraries are instrumental to students’ growth. We believe libraries are a fundamental part of any education, and we aim to teach students to navigate the library from a young age. Here are just a few of the benefits of library enrichment:
- Collaboration and Community: Reading is an individual task, but visiting the library offers a sense of community. Libraries are places where students and educators can come together to learn, collaborate, and grow.
- Independence: While libraries can foster a community, they can also help children gain a sense of independence. After all, students are left to navigate the shelves on their own and pick out what they like best.
- Curiosity: Children have a natural curiosity, and libraries are the perfect place to cultivate it further. Students have the chance to browse books that interest them while finding new interests along the way.
