Parent Volunteer Community

The PVC, Parent Volunteer Community, is an integral part of Yorkshire Academy. Help enrich our students’ learning experience: volunteer as a homeroom parent, assisting teachers with parties or special events; work with the school librarian as a library assistant; or serve as a reading and listening parent, reading to students, sometimes in their native language, or listening to the students read as they are learning.

Some of PVC’s special activities for the 2005-2006 school year include:

Family Friendship Connection

The Family Friendship Connection is a mentoring relationship for new families at Yorkshire. An existing Yorkshire family is paired with a new Yorkshire family. This is a great way for new families at the school to have “instant” friends who can help them acclimate to Yorkshire’s programs.

Blood Drive

The PVC organized a Blood Drive with the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Bank to benefit two precious Yorkshire Family children. The blood drive was a great success with many parents and teachers showing up to give blood or help.

Hurricane Relief

Our largest initiative to date is organizing, collecting, and distributing donations for Hurricane Katrina and Rita survivors. What an outpouring of support we received from our Yorkshire families and the community! We have donated food, clothing, and raised money for this relief effort. Yorkshire students donated water bottles with personalized notes attached to each bottle which were then given to children that were victims of the hurricane.

Family Dinner Night Out

Once a month the Yorkshire families all gather for “Dinner Night Out.” Families visit a local area restaurant that donates a portion of the proceeds from the evening to the school. This is a great way to mingle with friends and earn money for Yorkshire.

Parent Educations Seminars

Each year the PVC hosts parent education seminars that are free of charge and open to the community.
